- Before you click on a link, hover over it and see if it's actually what it says
- Never open sketchy files; if in doubt, upload it to VirusTotal, if there are more than 5 detections, it's likely a virus!
- Turn on Show File Extensions; a common thing to do is disguise an exe or vbs file as a pdf or jpg etc, showing file extensions prevents this
- Check the URL before entering login details; you might think that people don't fall for fake URLs but if they didn't the fake URLs wouldn't exist
- Don't install sketchy browser extensions; this mainly applies to non-trustworthy places that don't scan for malware like Opera Addons or websites telling you to install extensions with developer mode, these types of extensions often contain malware!
- Use an antivirus; if you're particulary prone to downloading malware, Windows Defender may not be enough, install a good free antivirus like Bitdefender or Kaspersky (just search for the free version) and avoid free AVs that track you or do not have real time scanning like Avast or Malwarebytes. Also avoid Antiviruses that charge you large amounts of money for a bad product like McAfee or Norton.
